Amy Joyce (aged 8), a pupil at Abbeyleix South National School, Abbeyleix, has won a top award in this years 58th Texaco Childrens Art Competition. Amy is pictured receiving her special merit award from Enda Riney, country chairman of Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited at a prize-giving ceremony held in Dublin recently. Her winning entry was one of 161 winners chosen from over 26,000 entries.

KNOCK GOES GREEN

To celebrate their recent achievements in being awarded their first green flag and winning the Laois Tidy Schools Competition, Knock National School will host a celebratory evening at the school on Thursday June 21 at 6.30pm. Special guest will be broadcaster and environmentalist Eanna Ni Lamhna. All pupils, parents, past pupils and the wider community are most welcome to join us as we raise the green flag.

June meeting held in social services centre on Tuesday June 5. President Pat O Halloran opened meeting with prayer. Vote of sympathy was passed with Dowling family, colt on the death of Elizabeth (Lil) Dowling. Alice Reilly read minutes of May meeting. Summer federation meeting will be held in community hall Ballyroan on Tuesday June 18 at 8pm. Members will attend. Brenda Dunican gave report on activity day in Portlaoise. Alice Reilly and Catherine Smith attended ICA AGM council meeting in Birr. Alice gave report on same. Nora Carroll thanked the ladies who helped with the collection on Sunflower day. A speedy recovery was extended to Maureen O Keeffe. Hostess for July Ynonne Porter. Competition is a single rose. Meeting ended with supper served by Brenda Dunican. Competition 1 Kathleen Cass, 2 Sadie Chester and 3 Bride Reilly. Raffle 1 Pat O Halloran and 2 Bernie Carroll. Next meeting July 3 at 8pm.

RAHEEN COMMUNITY ALERT

Special meeting with guest speaker to highlight the risk of bogus callers to homes and information on safe installation of Saorview box. All parishioners welcome. Meeting on Tuesday June 26 in ICA hall at 8.30pm.
