ACORNS

Abbeyleix Acorns Special Olympic club secured gold, silver and bronze medals at the regional Leinster final in Carlow on Thursday and Friday last. The competition was very tough but the atheletes used every reserve of energy to achieve victory for the club and gave a magnificant display of sheer determination.

Gold medal winners were Anne Foley and John Ryan for badminton, Alan O’Hanlon for skills. Silver medal winner Michael McEvoy, 4th Stephen Bergin, 6th Lee Whelan Table tennis. The winners were silver medal Stephen Bergin and bronze medal John Ryan. The winning team will proudly display their medals at The St Patrick’s Day parade in Abbeyleix. Congratulations to the atheletes, their parents and their great coaches.

TIDY TOWNS

Tidy Towns reminder last day for cutting hedges was February 28. Section 46 of the Wildlife Act states it is an offence to cut hedges during the bird nesting season which begins on March 1 and August 31. CYCLING AND TOURING

Laois Cycling and Touring Club are inviting you to come and join us for our weekly beginners cycle. Starts at the Maldron Hotel on the Abbeyleix Road on Sundays at 8-50 for a 9am start. Condolences to the family of the late Thomas ‘Tom Duff’ of Lucan, Co Dublin and formerly of Abbeyleix, who died on February 26, peacefully. Beloved husband of Agnes and dear father of Peter, Maria-Therese and Andrew and a devoted grandfather. Sadly missed by relatives and friends. Reposed at his home with Removal to St Patrick’s Church, Esker, Lucan on Friday for Requiem Mass followed by Burial in Esker Cemetery.
