Theresa Larkin, Roscrea handing over a cheque of � 3,877 to Roscrea Hospice Committee members, Charlie Horan and Colm Brophy. The cheque was the proceeds from her recent concert which was held in Racket Hall hotel.
The event, which was a huge success, featured renowned tenors Sean Costello and Frank Naughton with the Silvermines Choir.
Also performing on the night were The Theresa Larkin School of Music.
The Hospice committee and patrons would like to give huge thanks to Theresa and all involved for their support.

CAKE SALE

The Borris in Ossory Women’s Walking Group will hold a cake sale in St Joseph’s School, beside the church on Sunday May 27 after 11am mass. Proceeds from the cake sale will go towards two ICU Wards in Beaumont Hospital, the walkers’ chosen charity for this year’s 2012 Women’s Dublin City Mini Marathon. There will be a guess the doll’s name competition and guess the amount of sweets in the jar for the kiddies. Tea will also be available. Please support.

PROGRESSIVE 25 DRIVE

The results of last week’s Progressive 25 Drive in the O’Brien Hall were as follows: 1st Dan Tierney and Tom Kennedy, Peter Delaney and Michael Higgins, Mary Maher and Jacob Fairbrother, 2nd Mary Kelly and Noreen Ryan, Billy Kirby and Tommy White, Willie O’Reilly and Larry Dunne, Lar and Stasia Maher, Noel O’Sullivan and Michael Fitzpatrick, Tim Tierney and Tom Quigley, Tom and Jimmy Ryan, Joe Dooley and Tony O’Sullivan. 10th game Seamus Byrne and Michael Grimes, 20th game Anne Russell and Neill Maher. The Progressive 25 Drive will continue next Thursday night in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm.

SOCIAL SERVICES

Borris in Ossory Social Services held their monthly bingo party in St Canice’s Hall on Saturday May 19 where a lovely afternoon’s entertainment was enjoyed. Eileen Daly presided over the bingo and there were several lucky winners. As part of the Bealtaine Festival the guests were treated to a visit from members of Laois Writers Group who rear stories, recited poems, sang and played music. There was also some traditional music from Gerry Walsh and Jimmy Carroll. Tea and refreshments were served by members of the committee.

This year’s outing will take place in July and it is hoped to visit Glenstall Abbey and Bunratty Castle. The annual Social Services church gate collection will be taken up at all churches in the parish on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday July 7 and 8.

SYMPATHY

At a recent Social Services meeting, votes of sympathy were passed with the families of the late Micheal Dooley, Castle Avenue, Borris in Ossory, the late Liam ‘Chum’ Brophy, Killadooley, Ballybrophy and the late Pauline Maher, Ballaghmore, Borris in Ossory.

4 MONTH DRAW

The second of the 4 month draws in aid of Knockaroo Church Renovation Fund will take place on this Friday night May 25 in St Canice’s Hall at 6.30pm (before the 7.30pm mass). Promoters are asked to have their cards and money in to the sacristy between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesday evening.

PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES

The Ossory diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes is currently taking place and several parishioners from Borris in Ossory are gone on the pilgrimage. In conjunction with the pilgrimage, there will be annointing of the sick at the 7.30pm mass in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory on Friday night May 25.

ICA WEEKEND AWAY

Borris in Ossory ICA guild’s weekend away this year will from Sunday July 29 to Wednesday August 1and the venue will be Belfast. Staying at a four star hotel, the trip will include a visit to the Titanic exhibition and the sights of Belfast. There will also be a day spent touring the Antrim coast and a visit to the city of Armagh. Names and deposits of €100 should be given to Lily Sheeran (0505 41308) as soon as possible.

CEMETERY MASSES

The dates for this year’s cemetery masses in the parish are as follows: New Cemetery, Borris in Ossory Thursday June 7 at 7.30pm, Knockaroo Cemetery Thursday June 14 at 7.30pm, Killasmeestia Cemetery Thursday June 21 at 7.30pm and Skeirke Cemetery Thursday June 28 at 7.30pm.

HALL CLOSED

The hall is now officially closed for the summer months and will be open on Thursday and Saturday nights only.

OSSORY SHOW SOCIETY

The AGMeeting of the Ossory Agricultural Show Society took place recently and the following officers were elected for the cominy year. President Johnny Brophy, vice presidents William Mansfield, Lily Sheeran, Kathleen Bergin, Timothy O’Sullivan, Paddy Lowry, George Roe and Liam Walsh, chairman Peter Ging, vice chairman Betty Stanley, hon secretary Catherine Fitzgerald, joint treasurers Irene Newman and Margaret McCartney, joint PROs Margaret Campion, Marty Phelan and Paddy Buggy. This year’s Ossory Agricultural Show will take place at the showgrounds on Sunday July 22.
