THE 5th year Home Economic students of MCS recently took part in a ‘Come Dine with Me’ experience. The class divided up into groups of 3-4 people. The fee of €5 per person was charged to the students and went towards the winning prize.

The students had to prepare, cook and serve two starters, one hot and one cold, one main course and one desert. They had to design both a score card and a menu. They were judged on taste, texture, appearance, smell and presentation. The judges were a select number of staff. The winning team will be announced in the new year.

This was a great activity for us to participate in, as we were highly motivated because of the prize, it widened our range of skills and gave us more confidence in cooking for the future. Also it was great fun working in groups and getting feedback from our teachers. This event, organised by our super teacher Ms Foynes, was a huge success, so much so that it is going to become an annual event. We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Ms Foynes and all the judges.

As well as cooking themselves, the students enjoyed some tips from a well known face. There was excitement in the air as the senior cycle home economics classes set off to Supervalu to enjoy an afternoon of cooking demonstrations curtsey of Kevin Dunden, the celebrity chef.

The classes were accompanied by their Home Economics teachers Ms Foynes and Ms Bennit. They gathered around and watched attentively as Kevin whipped up delicious desserts which ranged from a mouth-watering apple tart with delicious honeycomb ice–cream, to dainty little cheese-cake fruit shoots, a terrific trifle and many, many more desserts.

The clever chef also cooked some brilliant beef-wellingtons, a succulent salmon and lots more amazing main courses. There was laughter in the air as Kevin exchanged light banter with the pupils of Mountmellick Community School. He also gave the pupils good tips about food preparation and creating meals on a budget which will really come in handy once the pupils head off to college and have to fend for themselves on campus or in rented accommodation.

The pupils got to taste the food as Kevin cooked it and everyone enjoyed the various dishes on offer. The highlight of the trip was when Kevin got into a photograph with the pupils and teachers, which now hangs proudly on the notice board. After the demonstration Kevin chatted amicably with the students until it was time for them to go.

The afternoon was enjoyed immensely by all and we would like to extend a massive thank you to Supervalu and Kevin.
