HEYWOOD Community School were back defending their title in the first round of the Laois inter-schools debating competition, which was held in St Fergal’s in Rathdowney on Monday November 12.

They fought a hard battle against St Mary’s CBS in Portlaoise arguing for the motion “that this house would prefer a benevolent dictator to modern democracy”. As people can imagine this was not an easy topic to address and especially to defend but like the true competitors that they are they took to it with gusto.

All the hard work of the well-prepared Heywood students paid off as they won this opening round with excellent delivery and convincing arguments. The Heywood team consisted of Evan Ladd (captain), Aoibhinn O’Sullivan, Philip Walton and Rachel Rafter and were prepared by teachers Collette O’Donnell and Sinead Clifford.

As well as debating, science was also on the agenda in the school recently when science week took place. This annual event focuses on the sciences and aims to promote an interest in them and see their application in real life. One area of science that really interests students is the area of forensic sciences where science is used to gather evidence and help to boost the circumstantial evidence for a crime.

With this in mind the school hosted a workshop on Forensic Science where a crime scene was set up and various items of evidence were on show. Once the scene was established and the items from the suspects retrieved the students were sent to various workstations to gather evidence and create a case for convicting the perpetrator. It was a fascinating interactive workshop and gave the students a real insight in to the crime scene investigation techniques.
