Derelict buildings a big issue for ‘lovely’ Stradbally

WHILE Stradbally is a lovely town there are difficulties with derelict buildings.

Stradbally, who increased their Tidy Towns overall mark from 277 last year to 282, is described as ‘a lovely town which provides the visitor with many interesting places and features to see’.

However the adjudicator cautions, “There are difficulties with derelict buldings and untidy sites and it is recommended that this issue is dealt with in conjunction with Laois County Council. A step-by-step approach is suggested whereby the sites in poor condition in the most prominent locations are prioritised.”

The adjudicator particularly liked the Market Square but added it was ‘a shame to see the market house in such poor condition and he urged the local committee to ‘consider options to retain and refurbish this distinctive central feature of your town’.

The restoration of the court house was praised as ‘a wonderful development’ and the adjudicator was also struck by the high standard of presentation of a high number of commercial premises.

Attractive landscaping projects were noted and the adjudicator added, “The planters throughout the town provide lovely colour and it was observed that a range of different types of planters are used. Perhaps in the future, consideration should be given to using a single or a very small number of different planter types.”

The standard of presentation of individual properties in Stradbally was generally high and owners were commended for their hard work.

The adjudicator was impressed with Stradbally. “The town has many strengths and by building on these and identifying new projects in the areas of waste minimisation and landscaping, further improvements can be made.”
