IN Cuilóg in Nass recently, the Mountrath Community School equestrian team were out in action. Megean Duff, in the individual event, had a very good clear round, and time which earned her third place.

The junior team were also in action on the day and although not placed, they were the best placed Laois team in the novice event.

The junior team were David Brickley, Ffion Jones, Jessica Guidera and Julie Keeley. Stephanie Carter also did very well in the open individuals on the day.

Many of the equestrians are members of the Laois Hunt Pony Club, but they also complete regular team training sessions with Mountrath Community School.

Ffion Jones said that it was important to have that extra guidance from the school and Ms Kelly. A lot of the team also use the Equine Centre in Clonkeen, near Portlaoise.

“It is such an amazing thrill to get your gallop through the arena or open field before the competition, its just a brilliant thrill and the team are very supportive of each other,” she said.

There is a great equestrian team in Mountrath Community School and they attend many inter schools events throughout the year. After Megans success in Cuilóg in Naas, the school body was delighted for her. “It’s so enjoyable and I am delighted to have come third in Naas”, said Megan of her success.

Ms Kelly and various parents act as chef dequippe at the meetings.

The sport is very popular in Mountrath Community School and the students are looking forward to their next open meeting in the inter schools in Mullingar coming up soon.
