Girls On F1 Fast Track

FIVE Scoil Chriost Ri students are leading the way in the technology stakes with their Formula 1 motor car design.

As part of the ‘F1 in Schools’ initiative, the girls have designed a full functional miniature gas-powered balsa wood F1 model car. With the current trend in employment statistics pointing firmly in the direction of science and technology, these girls look to have already kickstarted their careers in the area with a very catching design.

The team is called XLR8, and includes Sarah Preston, Aine Reams, Una Hetherington, Rosemary Cushion all under the guidance of team manager Courtney Aldrich. Those interested can find out more on their website www.xlr8scoilchriostri.weebly.com. The students involved in the project expressed their thanks for the invaluable sponsorship provided by RR Projects of Tullamore as well as The Pantry and Smaointe in Portlaoise.

Elsewhere in the school, students collected their first ever senior football Leinster C title with a powerful win over St Michael’s Loreto in Navan recently.

With Cork All-Star Geraldine O’Flynn and local legend Pat Critchley at the helm the Scoil Chriost Ri girls already had plenty of expert tuition, but just in case they needed an extra boost Cork ladies football manager Eamon Ryan dropped in to give them an impromptu extra training session.

The seven-time All-Ireland winning boss was in the school to give a motivational talk on the importance of good attendance, attainment and positive attitude in schools, and his fascinating discussion had the entire student body, (as well as some of the staff!) hanging on his every word. On his lunch break, Eamon took the senior footballers out to the pitch and given the nature of their win in the final two days later, he certainly seems to have made an impact.

As well as sports, the students were also flexing their drama muscles. The ever popular Humourfit Drama Company returned to Scoil Chriost Ri last week where director and actor Michael O’Sullivan again captivated the crowd of enthusiastic 1st years with his much-loved mixture of comedy and hard-hitting real life issues.
