Hectic year at Heywood

It has been a hectic year at Heywood Community School since the return in August.

The school has been exceptionally busy and it has been a challenge for the new Deputy Principal Ms Geraldine Ryan, as she adjusted to the demands of running a school of 680 enthusiastic students and 50 staff.

The school had an unannounced inspection where it shone with flying colours.

New students were eased into the routine, and new teachers blended into the successful Heywood mix.

The school performed very well in the sports areas winning their section in the Leinster senior hurling, getting to a Leinster final in basketball and making strong showings in Gaelic football.

Other talents were on show also with debating teams in English, French and German, Art competitions in the Abbeyleix Credit Union, Michael Kirkman’s fine showing in the All-Ireland School’s talent Search and four students making the national finals of the Poetry Aloud competition.

Last year’s Leaving Cert student, James Bergin, won an Entrance Scholarship in the Arts Faculty in UCD and multi medal winner at the World Transplant Games, Robbie Lyons was one of the carriers of the Olympic Torch through the streets of Dublin.

Student Cormac McGowan represented the school in the Young Scientist Exhibition.

There were German and French exchanges organised with schools and families abroad, and the Transition Years had very successful outings to the Rosemary Smith School of Motoring and cookery workshops in Cloughjordan.

One of the real highlights of the year was the very successful show Heywood’s Got Talent, which proved a huge hit with a packed auditorium and a delighted crowd, and showed that whether it is in the academic, sporting or artistic fields, Heywood really does have lots of talent!
