Judges admire and enjoy Mountrath
This year the Tidy Towns judges found their Mountrath visit to be a most enjoyable experience. They particularly admired the range of original buildings in the town which remain intact and for the most part in very good condition.
The judges were struck by the lovely terraces of buildings, as they make a tremendous contribution to the town centre due to their simple and attractive architectural style. A number of attractive buildings were also observed in the town centre and it was encouraging to see that businesses are keeping their premises in such good condition.
The welcome stone at the bridge was considered to be quite attractive and its appearance was enhanced by the natural stone raised landscaped bed. The landscape bed at the entrance to the church was reasonable and it suggested that some landscaping should be considered for the church car park.
The committee were commended for their work on the excellent town park, while the popularity of the river with anglers on adjudication day was striking. Praise was given for the the committee’s work with Laois County Council in trying to reduce the incidence of dog fouling and only very isolated incidences of litter were spotted in the town centre. Overall, the standard of tidiness observed in Mountrath was good, with no weeds visible at kerbs while pavements and roadsides appeared neat and tidy. The adjudicator also liked the approach of dealing with blank walls by painting murals on them.
However, it was noted that some improvements are still possible. A headless sign was observed close to the junction with Shannon Street and some of the planted tubs in the town centre may require painting or staining for 2013. There are untidy sites at the Mountrath Enterprise Park, particularly at the entrance.
Judges remarked that it was great to hear that new residents committees have been set up in Clonbarrow, Garran and Moonbawn. The standard of presentation in the residential areas was deemed generally good.
In conclusion, Mountrath was commended on another very good performance in the competition, rising from 241 points last year to 249 this year.
