Burning Fatality in Portarlington. Dr TF Higgins, JP, Co. Coroner, held an inquest at Bracklone, Portarlington, on Monday afternoon, into the death of an infant named John Kenna, aged 6 months, which occurred on the previous Saturday as a result of burns.

William Kenna, Bracklone, labourer, said he was informed about 12 o’ clock noon that the child was burned. He came home and found the deceased in his mother’s arms, badly burned about the head. The child died on Saturday night.

Mrs Margaret Kenna, mother of the deceased, deposed that on Friday, about 11 am, the child was in the cradle near the fire, when she had to leave the house to go after another child that was on the stile near the door. She was away about a minute and when she came back the deceased was lying on the pillow in the fire. The pillow was blazing and the cradle was turned over.

Dr. Thomas W. Rice, Portarlington, deposed deceased had very extensive burns. The jury found that death was caused by shock from burns.

Tally-no!

On Thursday of last week, the King’s County Foxhounds, with Mr Biddulph, master, proceeded to the residence fo Mr. AF Boyle, JP, Belmount, Queen’s County, where the hunt was to start from. A large number of ladies and gentlemen on horseback had assembled there. Some time before a start was made a party of farmers and United Irish Leaguers arrived, it is stated, from Durrow and immediate district, and informed Mr. Biddulph that they objected to the hunt crossing their lands if a certain gentleman accompanied them.

Mr. Biddulph announced his intention of abandoning the hunt, and some time afterwards a move was made for Harristown where no opposition was offered.
