It appears that on the 2nd. January, while engaged in ploughing in a field near the village of Ballyroan, a young powerful horse, the property of Patrick Corcoran, and worked by his son John, broke loose from the plough, and from the other horse to which he was coupled, jumped three high walls with broken chains and swingle-trees hanging after him, and came at a furious pace into Ballyroan.
Constable Montgomery was standing at the barrack gate, and observing the infuriated animal, followed him in hot pursuit. The constable managed to get hold of the reins, and almost at once quelled the horse’s mad and rapid course. Before, however, he brought him to a stanstill, the Constable was dragged about the road and against the wall. He had a very narrow escape, and save for one of his hands being bruised he was uninjured.
Shot his Lordship’s pheasant
Ballacolla Petty Sessions. James Percy, Rathdowney, was summoned at the suit of Lord Castletown for having on lst November, 1912, trespassed on the lands of Mrs. Dempsey, Grantstown, in pursuit of game.
Wm Shanwick, head gamekeeper on his lordship’s property, told of seeing the defendant shooting a pheasant. Mr AF Rolleston, solicitor, produced an agreement which showed that the game rights were vested in Lord Castletown.
Defendant said he entered Mrs Dempsey’s land ignorant of the fact that the game belonged to Lord Castletown. A fine of 5s with 6s 6d costs was imposed.
