Ireland should be shown up in a attractive light towards this end, he said. The picture of this country must be right if we are to attract visitors.
‘Slim’ drops sticks
Our big drummer. The familiar figure of Paddy (‘Slim’) Connell with the brass drum of St Joseph’s Accordion Band, Portlaoise, may be a thing of the past. At the agm of the band, on Sunday last, he intimated his intention of laying aside the “sticks”, as he had too many commitments, apart from his responsibilities as a family man.
He was re-elected secretary, for which he thanked the members, and promised to carry on as best he could for the good of the band and the honour of Portlaoise.
Juvenile Convention
With sixty one teams affiliated in the 1962 championships and standards reaching a new high level, Mr. Sean Barrett, Secretary, who is returned unapposed, will present a comprehensive report of a successful year’s working at Sunday’s Laois Juvenile Board Convention in Portlaoise.
Among those nominated for positions: Chairman Rev. J. Hayden, CC (outgoing), and Mr D. Kerry (Rovers); vice-chairman Rev. Bro. Darcy, C.B.S. (outgoing), Mr. D. Kerry (Rovers), Mr. T. Byrne, N.T. (St. Joseph’s), Mr. D. O’Mahoney (Mountmellick), and Mr. Joseph Walsh (Graiguecullen).

Former Abbeyleix and Ballpickas hurler, Mr. John Fitzgerald, who had been spending a short holiday at his Green Road home, with his wife and three children, left Shannon Airport on Friday last, on his return journey to New York.
His visit was the first in five years, and although he thorougly enjoyed his holiday, he had, like most of us just now, one complaint--the weather. Not exactly expecting an Indian Summer, he was unprepared for the Arctic spell. His is looking forward to his next visit.
Flat heels
Like so many other public institutions, Portlaoise Technical School, which was officially opened by the Minister for Education this week, has a notice for the attention of the ladies--”No stiletto heels, please!’ This is only right and just, as the sharp heels worn by the “Modern Miss” can cause cause damage to the high class school floors.
