Leinter Express Times Past 2002 - High Court rejects challenge

The High Court has turned down an application by a Laois schoolteacher for an injunction to prevent Laois County Council and National Roads Authority representatives going onto her lands to carry out site investigations for proposed new roadworks.

The High Court has turned down an application by a Laois schoolteacher for an injunction to prevent Laois County Council and National Roads Authority representatives going onto her lands to carry out site investigations for proposed new roadworks.

The decision rejecting the application of Mrs Joan Finlay, Ballycuddy House, Ballacolla, was given on Friday afternoon, December 20 by Mr Justice Michael Peart. He had heard the case on the previous Wednesday and reserved judgement.

Mrs Finlay had sought an interlocutory injunction against the Council and Roads Authority pending the hearing of a full action in the High Court later.

Street fear

Our streets had gone out of control--and people were afraid to walk them, Cllr John Bonham told the County Council monthly meeting.

He proposed that the Council should make some grant assistance available to instal CCTV cameras at troublesome spots.

Senior Executive Officer Anna Marie Delaney said the Council would raise the matter with the Gardai and consult with the Chamber of Commerce.

Committee dries up

Borris-in-Ossory Joint Drainage Committee, formed in 1842, had been disbanded by Government order, County Councillors were told at their monthly meeting.

Senator Kieran Phelan and Cllrs Martin Phelan and Michael Lalor expressed regret at its demise. It had, they said, done very useful work.

French connection

French politician Julien Bigana attended a County Council meeting last week as a guest of Ballacolla’s Cllr Martin Phelan.

Though aged only 22, Julien is Deputy Mayor of Chassey les Scey in eastern France.
