ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

There will be an important meeting about the St Patrick’s Day parade this Tuesday February 12 in The Druid at 8pm. The future of the parade depends on a good turnout at the meeting. New committee members are urgently required. For queries contact Rosemary 087 2726525 or Gerry 087 9570034.

LIBRARY

The current art exhibition in the gallery features work by Laois artists Rebecca Deegan and Donna Kearns. The knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. All are welcome. The adult book club meets the first Tuesday of each month. New members welcome. Our library board games club for ages 10 to 12 will meet on Thursday February 14 from 4pm to 5 pm. Internet, printing, scanning and photocopying services are available in the library.

CROSSWORD CLUB

The library hopes to start an adult crossword club shortly. If you are interested, please phone 057 8644572 or give your name to a member of staff.

DRAMA

Mountmellick Drama Group will stage Ray Cooney and John Chapman’s hilarious farce ‘Move Over Mrs Markham’ on Thursday February 28 and Friday and Saturday March 1 and 2 at 8pm nightly in the community arts centre. Admission €10 with concessions €5.

This play exposes the intricacies and complications which ensue when different sets of hopeful lovers all converge on the bedroom of the Markham’s supposedly empty flat. The complications and deceptions which follow assure a hectic and hilarious evening.

GUN CLUB CLAY SHOOT

SAVE A LIFE

REMEMBERING Ww 1

Do you have an ancestor from Mountmellick that served in World War 1? Do you have any WW1 memorabilia or documents? The ‘First World War – Mountmellick Research Group’ is a local group set up to research and commemorate Mountmellick’s involvement in World War 1. The group seek information from the public to help them do this. The next meeting is on Monday February 25 at 8pm in MDA and all are welcome.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION

We thank Thomas Byrne, the Citizens Information Officer in Portlaoise, for attending our meeting on Wednesday February 6 and giving a most informative explanation of last December’s budget and how it has affected our members’ income.

The next meeting is on Wednesday February 20 at 10.30am in the MDA when the AGM will be held and a new committee elected. We hope that all members will attend this important meeting. Any members who would like to be on the committee should put their names forward for election.

New members are welcome to join the club at any time throughout the year.

At the moment the weekly activities for members are as follows. Mondays: Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: dancing with Maureen Culleton from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. Thursdays: music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital 2pm to 4pm.

MACRA PANTO

This year Macra present Robinson Crusoe from Wednesday February 13 to Sunday February 17. The show is on at 8.15pm from Wednesday to Saturday and ends with a 3pm matinee show on Sunday. For a fantastic night of family entertainment book your ticket early at O’Gorman’s or from any committee member. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night.

LOURDES

This year’s pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Wednesday July 17 to Wednesday July 24 at a cost of €770 per person sharing. We will stay at The Solitude Hotel. The spiritual leaders will be Fr Mícheál Murphy PP and Fr Pat Hennessy PP. Contact Eleanor at 087 7670915.

ST PAUL’S ENROLMENT

St Paul’s National School Irishtown, welcomes any enquiries about school places for September next or the following years. An open day is being held on Wednesday February 13 from noon to 1.30pm or contact the principal on 057 862 4781. St Paul’s is a small, co-educational primary school under Church of Ireland patronage.

JUVENILE GAA

Juvenile hurling training takes place each Monday evening in the sports complex at the following times: 6.30pm to 7.30pm for u8 and 7.30pm to 8.30pm for u10 and u12. U8 football training takes place in the sports complex every Friday at 6pm. All new players are welcome to attend.

GAA DINNER DANCE

Mountmellick GAA Club is holding its dinner dance on Saturday February 23 in the Killeshin hotel. Tickets are on sale for €30 each.

2012 was a successful year for the club with the Junior hurlers winning the County Junior B Hurling championship and the u21 footballers winning the County A football championship.

THE ROCK GAA

Laois County Board draw tickets are now available to buy from all committee members. There are 4 monthly draws with the first draw taking place on March 1. There are 20 cash prizes to be won per month. Tickets cost €130 and can be purchased in 4 instalments of €32.50 as an alternative to a once-off payment in full. This draw is a major source of annual revenue for our club. .

TABLE QUIZ

A table quiz in aid of Sarsfields is being held in The Druid on Friday February 22 at 9pm. Cost €10 per adult and €5 per student taking part. Come along for an enjoyable night out and pit your wits against quizmaster Paddy Buggy.

COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE

The above are delighted to announce their website which can be viewed at www.mountmellickartscentre.ie. They have also opened a Facebook page called Mountmellick Arts Centre. They will have an events questionnaire in a number of locations in the town and all who complete the questionnaire will be entered in a free draw for 2 season tickets to the drama festival. The festival runs this year from Friday March 8 to Friday March 15 inclusive. The draw takes place on Friday March 1. To contact the centre please phone 057 8697600.

COMHALTAS

Classes are back at their usual times. For those attending cupla focal remember to bring your sentence sheets as we continue to build vocabulary. The annual concert will be held on Friday March 22 in the Arts Centre.

This year Mountmellick Comhaltas marks 25 years of holding classes and 21 years affiliated to Comhaltas so it is hoped to mark these momentous achievements. Comhaltas hopes to run an event for the year of the Gathering so if any member has any suggestions please let the committee know.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and National Champion. For details contact 087 2768843.

GYMNASTICS

Classes take place in the Owenass hall on Saturdays at the following times. 10am, 11am and noon for girls. 1.15pm for 3 and 4 year olds. 2pm for boys only. Classes will also be held midweek. Please contact Mary at 086 7914933 or mary.e.obrien2@gmail.com for further details.

LATE ALICE DEMPSEY

There was much sadness at the death of Alice Dempsey on Sunday February 3 at the Mid Western Hospital Limerick. Alice was a resident of Parnell St and formerly of Strahard and her passing is sadly regretted by all who knew her.

Removal to St Joseph’s Church took place on Tuesday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon on Wednesday with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. Alice was predeceased by her brother Eddie. Alice is mourned by her brothers Ambrose and John, her sisters Marion, Ann, Carmel and Helena, family, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended.
