Mountrath man gets evicted

MOUNTRATH man Lee Wellstead has been evicted from his home at Knockanina, between Mountrath and Castletown. This comes after a large group of protestors prevented the County sherriff from evicting Mr Wellstead from his house in February.

According to the Defend Our Homes League, Gardaí sealed off the lane leading to the home of Mr Wellstead on Wednesday March 14 and forced entry by kicking down the front door.

The reposession was carried out on behalf of Ulster Bank. The reposession was condemned by Joan Collins TD, who speaking in the Dail yesterday said that she was appalled and outraged by the eviction of Lee Wellstead and his daughter from their family home. “Where have we come to as a nation when the Gardai act as eviction bailiffs for a British state owned bank? Have they forgotten our history as a people?”

Mr Wellstead was evicted after losing a long running battle against Ulster Bank in the Commercial Court. He bought the three-bedroom property on four acres of land in Knockanina in 2003 for €80,000 and then acquired a top up loan on the mortgage of €30,000. Subsequently he failed to keep up with his repayments, and the bank was granted a repossession order last year.
