Pleased by well kept Killasmeestia
UP 10 points from last year’s score of 232 t0 242, the village of Killameestia impressed the judges who praised the committee for all their hard work.
Judges remarked that the church is a lovely structure set in very well maintained grounds and the school directly opposite is also impressive due to its very good standard of presentation. The parochial house was also admired, as were the small seat and natural stone wall adjacent to the pump. The mass stile and natural stone wall and bridge were also deemed to be lovely features of the village.
It was clear to the judges that the committee worked hard on their landscaping projects for 2012. The planted bed at the entrance to the community hall, the landscaping bed in front of the school and the stone marker on the approach road enhanced by the attractive planting at the base were all remarked upon. The providing of wildlife plaques to show the variety of wildlife in Killameestia was also commended.
No litter at all was observed in the village during adjudication, an excellent achievement and a reflection of the committee’s hard work on litter control. The village’s participation in Laois clean up week appeared to be having very positive effects and the committee were commended on the standard of tidiness achieved by the neatly trimmed and well maintained verges and the appearance of road signs. The painted kerb stones also give the village a neat and tidy appearance.
There were a number of improvements recommended by the judges. The school signs were deemed a little untidy on the approach from the south and an untidy field gate was observed on the approach road from Borris-in-Ossory.
The owners of private residences have worked hard on improving the presentation of their properties and this was evident during adjudication when a high standard of presentation of individual properties and gardens was observed.
The approach road from Borris in Ossory was reasonably good with tidy verges and the planted milk urns provide a colourful and interesting feature at the entrance. The approach road from the south also reaches a good standard as the verges are very tidy and the mature trees are attractive.
Judges concluded by saying that they were very impressed with the village of Killameestia and it is great to see that it continues to make noticeable improvements from year to year.
