PARISH NOVENA

Portlaoise Parish Novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help runs from Wednesday, February 13 to April 10 Ash Wednesday every Wednesday at 7:30pm. Petitions will be remembered and prayed for throughout the nine weeks. Speakers include: Hector O hEochagáin 2FM (February 13), Frances Black singer (February 20), Brian Cody hurling coach (February 27), Brian Crowley MEP (March 6), John Longergan retired prison governor (March 13), Mary Kennedy RTE Nationwide (March 20), Fr Liam Lawton composer(March 27), Joanne O’Riordan Young Person of the Year (April 3), Johnny Murtagh jockey (April 10).

Ash Wednesday

Blessed Ashes will be distributed at all Masses on February 13. Note that due to the Novena (at 7.30pm) ashes will be distributed before Mass (7pm) and after the Novena Mass and prayers.

PORTLAOISE PLOUGHING

The Portlaoise and District ploughing takes place this Saturday, Febuary 16 in Rathleague on Maher’s and Conroy’s. It will be sign posted off the N80 Portlaoise to Stradbally Road and the R426 Portlaoise to Timahoe Road. All entries must be in no later than Friday, February 15 and the match will start at 12pm sharp. For queries contact our secretary Mejella on 086-3101822. Results announced in the Rock Inn where a dinner will also be provided. The committee look forward to a successful match. The Laois Ploughing Dinner dance will take place March 16 in the Maldron Hotel. Tickets available from committee members or any county member. The HEATH FUN RUN

The Heath Hall & Cemetery Committee are holding their annual sponsored Fun Walk on Sunday, February 24, assemble at the old Heath Hall at 2pm. Refreshments served afterwards. Everybody welcome.

Portlaoise Library News

Blind Date Forget judging a book by its cover, why not date a mystery book, as recommended by library staff, this Valentine’s Day. We wrap up books that we have enjoyed with a short humorous description to help you to decide which book to ‘take out’. Exhibition: Portlaoise College are exhibiting their award-winning project about the orphans from Mountmellick Workhouse who were helped to emigrate during the famine. It will be displayed in the library until Saturday, February 16.

SIN FOR LAOIS HOSPICE

Strenght in Numbers will perform a charity concert in aid of Laois Hospice which takes place on Saturday, February 23 next in Kavanagh’s Portlaoise.

Cuisle Centre meeting Postponed

A public meeting in the Cuisle Cancer Support Centre, Block Rd, Portlaoise planned for Tuesday, February 12 from 7.30pm taht was to have been given Frank Brennan from “Men Against Cancer” has been postponed. The meeting will be rearranged for a fure date.

Trócaire

Trocaire boxes are available for this year’s lenten collection at SS Peter and Paul’s Church or at the Parish Centre. Last year nearly €20,000 was collected in Portlaoise Parish.

Relics of Don Bosco

Visit of the Relics of Don Bosco to Parish Church, Tuesday, February 26 2.30pm to Wednesday 27 8.30am. In association with the 200th anniversary of his birth, the Salesians have embarked on a world wide tour with the reliquary of their founder – St. John Bosco (born 1815). We are fortunate in Portlaoise that, Mass will be celebrated at 7.30pm, Midnight, 7.30am. Departure 8.30am

The Church will remain open during the visit.

Condolences to the family of the late Fintan Dooley of 7 Dr Murphy Place who died suddenly on Saturday February 2. Son of Joe and the late Elish, he is also deeply regretted by his loving family Gabrielle, Martin, Pascal, Anne Marie and Paul, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest at the Regional Hospital, Portlaoise with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Burial last Thursday in SS. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Condolences to the family of the late Teresa Maher (nee Nerney) late of Rookfield, Stradbally Road, Portlaoise who died peacefully on February 7 at home surrounded by her loving family, Teresa loving wife to Tom and dearly loved mother to Michael, Tom, Dave, Deirdre and Teresa and the late Johnny is also deeply regretted brother Michael, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at her residence with Removal last Saturday to arrive at SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in St. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
