For many, the New Year starts in Timahoe - at the fundraising walk, or walks, for the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA).

And as organiser Johnny Dalton notes, there’s no better way to shake off the Christmas excesses and to improve one’s physical well-being than a hike through the Fossey hills overlooking lovely Timahoe.

The 11th annual walk starts at the village green at 1pm on New Year’s Day. Leading the way will be GAA President Liam O’Neill.

There are two routes: six kilometres and, for the fitter sort, 10 kilometres. Both take in beautiful countryside and afford splendid views of the plains of Laois.

Back in Timahoe sustenance will await the participants in the form of sandwiches, tea, coffee and soup in the Community Hall.

Sponsorship cards are available from Johnny or, alternatively, contributions can be made on the day of the walk.

Funds raised will go towards helping IWA clients in Laois, he explains. He points particularly to the work of the Association’s centre in Portlaoise.

Johnny adds: “I am calling on as many people as possible to come out to Timahoe and support this event, and to enjoy themselves. It’s for a very good cause.”
