It was a sad ‘mo’ment for some when the 26 prison officers from Midlands Prison Portlaoise shaved off their moustaches last November 30.

It was all for a good cause of course, the national ‘Movember’ event, which raises money each November for prostate cancer research, by encouraging men nationwide to grow moustaches for the month.

The group of 26 prison officers raised just over €3,000 for their mo-growing efforts, thanks to the generous contributions of their workmates, families and friends.

Noel O’Reilly who recently presented the cheque to the Irish Cancer Society on behalf of his colleagues, said some had got quite attached to their moustaches, with a few opting for the ‘handlebar’ look.

“There were some partners who I believe didn’t like them so much,” he said.

All the moustaches were shaved off during a fundraising night in Ramsbottom’s pub on November 30, but Noel says the group will definitely be taking part in the event again later this year.
