BEST OF LUCK

Best of luck to Rathdowney-based Laois Fire Service sub Officer Joe Harding who will take part in the world’s biggest firefighter event in London this month. The World Rescue Challenge (WRC) is being held in London on October 18 to 20. Joe and Portlaoise firefighter Mary Territt won the National Trauma Challenge held at Ashbourne, Co Meath earlier this year and represent Ireland in the world trauma event.

OSSORY CYCLE CLUB

The first AGM of Ossory Cycling Club takes place on Thursday, October 18 in O’Reilly’s Lounge, Rathdowney at 8.30pm.It is hoped that all members can attend, and those who would like to join our club are also welcome.

Coffee Day

Thank you to everyone who supported, helped or held a Coffee Morning in aid of Laois Hospice. Your continued support is much appreciated. All funds raised are used for services in Laois. To date the amount raised from the Rathdowney area is €1,331.94

Flower Demonstration

A ‘Halloween Treat’ Flower Demonstration with Oliver and Martin Lawlor of Lawlors Florists, Durrow, in aid of Erkina House and Meals on Wheels, Rathdowney, will be held in the Parochial Hall Rathdowney on Thursday, October 25 at 8pm. Tickets costing €7 will be available at the door.

PARENT & TODDLER GROUP

The group meet every Friday morning in the Marion Centre (beside the RC Church) from 10am to12 noon. All welcome parents and minders with children from new born to pre-school. No joining fee - €3 per morning.

BINGO

A great Bingo is held every Tuesday night at 8.30pm in the Rathdowney Community Centre.Your support would be greatly appreciated this Bingo is run by the Community Centre Group.

KNITTING CLUB

The club meet every Monday from 2pm to 4.30pm in the communal centre on Cuan Bhride. They do wonderful work and are like one big family. The club is always anxious to get new members to join. So come along to us any Monday.

PLAYGROUND GROUP

There is tennis coaching every Saturday on the MUGA in the Playground (or in the community centre on wet days) ages 5, 6 & 7 at 2-3pm, ages 8, 9 & 10 at 3-4pm and ages 11+ at 4-5pm cost €2 per week. To book phone Laura 087 9423833, tennis rackets provided.

RATHDOWNEY REVIEW

The 2012 review is currently being compiled and anyone wishing to contribute anything of interest is invited to submit these items.Such items might include wedding photos, obituaries, first communion, sporting achievements, family profiles, historical items, debs, etc. Please send items or call to Betty O’Brien, Maureen Guilfoyle or Niall O’Doherty as soon as possible.

RATHDOWNEY MACRA

Well done to Rathdowney Macra for holding beef and sheep stock judging recently, it was a great night. Upcoming competitions: Bowling October 13, in Roll & Bowl, Portlaoise. Impromptu/Public Speaking October 21, in Portlaoise. Welding on November 6 in Old Town Construction. COMMUNITY CENTRE

There was a set dancing workshop, set dance and old time ceile on Saturday, September 15 and €450 was raised towards the refurbishment of the Community Centre. The committee would like to thank everybody who helped to make the event a success. A big thank you to those who sponsored the raffle prizes, donated refreshments, made sandwiches, baked cakes, cleaned the hall, displayed the posters and helped on the day. Many thanks to everyone who came along to support it. A special thanks to Maureen, Danny and the musicians and singers for entertaining us.

OPEN DOOR THEATRE

Laois Open Door Theatre present Keane and Scream – excerpts from some of John B. Keane plays and scream and horror from films and musicals.Playing Athy, Abbeyleix, Rathdowney and Portlaoise during November. Enquiries to 087 9614235.

WALKING JOGGING CLUB

Fit4life is starting up on Monday, October 15 and every Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) meeting in the square 7pm -8pm. There will be several groups for walkers, walker/joggers, joggers all level of fitness welcome. This is a Playground Group Initiative, for over 18’s. High visibility vest must be worn.
