Scenic Clonaslee ‘has it all’
CLONASLEE scored very well in this year’s Tidy Towns competition with lots of high praise from judges scoring an impressive 296 points in this years competition.
In an impressive report, the judges found that the village enjoys a strong committee with 10 adults and eight children taking part in the projects. It was also found that the committee also has very strong links with Laois County Council, Laois Partnership, FÁS, Coillte and a number of local voluntary groups and clubs.
The village committee were encouraged however to include their Tidy Towns action plan in their submission to the competition next year. The judge was very impressed with not just the hard work that had been achieved in the village so far but also its location.
“Clonaslee appears to have it all, original and attractive buildings, a pleasant riverside setting and a dramatic backdrop of the Slieve Blooms”.
A number of buildings stood out including the heritage centre which was “presented to a high standard”, and businesses Blooms, Fallons, the Clonaslee Inn, Hickeys and The Swan Bar and Lounge.
The village’s stone walls and the great work gone into maintaining them was also noted. There were a number of vacant buildings seen in the village which are in poor condition and continuing to deteriorate.
Landscaping in the village and in the surrounding areas was another highlight including landscaping in the grounds of the community centre and opposite the church.
“The approach road from Kinnity deserves a special mention as the mature treews that line the road and the high quality and standard of landscaping at the green were most impressive,” it said..
It was however suggested to the group that they control the number of planters and window boxes in the area “as they require a great deadl of water”. The riverside walk was noted as a lovely feature in the area, providing a valuable amenity for residents and an important wildlife corridor.
The woodland area was also admired. It was suggested to the group that perhaps the school could get involved with completing a wildlife survey to indicate the levels of biodiversity in the area. The village appeared virtually litter free with only one instance of litter. judges put this down to the twice daily litter picking and litter awareness campaigns.
The village was also noted for its “high standard of tidyness” as well as organising a big litter clean up and working with both primary and secondary school students. Clonaslee has a well deserved reputation which judges said was well earned again this year.
