St Paul’s NS Portlaoise welcomes GAA president Liam O’Neill
GAA President Liam O’ Neill recently paid a visit to St Paul’s Primary School in Portlaoise where he attended the medal presentation for the school’s interclass gaelic football league.
This league was opened to all the pupils in the senior classes and was held in September and October. The Jimmy Cottor Trophy for the winning team was presented by Mrs Breda Smyth, who has been sponsoring the medals and trophies for the league for many years now.
She also made a special presentation to Kieran Brosnan in recognition of his dedicated service to the Jimmy Cottor league in the school over the past 27 years. The players on the teams who made it to the final were introduced to Liam O Neill.
The St Paul’s team who won the recent Rionn 1 final in the Cumann na mBunscol football leagues was also congratulated by the President. The foundation of Cumann na mBunscol by Liam O’ Neill himself in 1988 was acknowledged and recognised, as the participation in its activities is one of the best memories children now have of their primary school days.
The President then took part in a question and answer session where he gave interesting and informative answers to the pupil’s probing questions.
He then addressed all the school and encouraged the children to stay involved in and play sports, emphasising that when they do play they should always play fairly and sportingly and always remember to have fun and enjoy what they are playing.
The school principal, Des Sutton, made a presentation to Liam O Neill in recognition of his historic visit to St Paul’s, expressing his gratitude for his finding of his time in his busy schedule to visit the school and to be present for the medal presentation.
All the children in the school were thrilled when they then got an unexpected surprise when Mr Sutton announced that they had homework off in recognition of the great occasion.
The day’s event no doubt encouraged all the young sportsmen to keep up their training and stick with the chosen sport of their choice.
