Talking newspaper celebrates 21 years with concert

THE Laois Talking Newspaper is celebrating its 21st birthday this year and will be holding a special fundraising concert on Wednesday July 4 in Portlaoise Parish Centre. The concert will see Martin Bourke take to the stage to play the music of Stephen Foster.

The Stephen Foster profile has been researched and scripted by Martin who has a life long interest in music. Limerick native Martin will be performing a profile of Stephen which includes showing photographs accompanied by a spoken account of the artist’s life, interspersed with songs from the artist.

Stephen Foster was born in Pittsburgh in America on July 4 in 1826. Of nearly 300 songs that he wrote, many became popular and still are today including ‘Hard Times Come Again No More’, ‘Oh Susanna’, ‘My Old Kentucky Home’, ‘I Dream of Jeannie’, ‘Beautiful Dreamer’, and ‘Gentle Annie’.

The Laois Talking Newspaper desperately needs to update recording equipment and organisers are hoping that this great night’s entertainment will get a lot of support both from recipients of the Talking Newspaper, friends, family and music lovers.

The Laois Talking Newspaper is a free 90 minute audio cassette tape recording of local news, features, entertainment, and sports, which is produced every week. The paper gives readings from both the Leinster Express and the Laois Nationalist and is free to anyone with a disability or infirmity which prevents them from reading the printed word. People who are blind or visually impared, those with disabilities and people with literacy problems can avail of the service.

There are a limited number of tickets will be available for the concert as it is a fully seated event. Tickets are priced at €10 with concessions available for wheelchair users. Easy access and free parking available. Refreshments are included. A raffle will be held on the night, prizes will include a copy of the CD of music played during the concert. Tickets are available from Portlaoise Support Group, Old Parochial House, Dublin Road, Portlaoise. For more information on tickets or on the talking newspaper, contact 057 86 61754.
