The return of Camross is a big success
Described by judges as “an attractive little village”, Camross was welcomed back to the competition after a ten year absence, gaining a respectable score of 206.
Judges suggest getting help from the council, and making a three year plan.
The old church and graveyard and parochial house caught the eye, and the natural stone walls and the bridge on the Mountrath road were admired.
The Camross Inn looked exceptionally well, and the thatched cottage in the village centre, the attractive school with its green flag, the old pump and information maps came in for praise.
Mature trees on the Borris in Ossory road and at the Parochial house were admired. The church grounds were very well maintained. Judges suggested landscaping the village pump, and praised the establishment of the Parish garden.
They suggested a bird survey in the woods, and a heritage trail at the river. Litter control was “clearly a strong category”, and the participation in Clean Up Laois week was praised. The village was generally very well maintained, with no sign of roadside weeds and well swept verges.
Waste minimisation marks were low, as no projects were undertaken other that talking to the school. Suggested projects included composting, harvesting rainwater and growing plants. Recycling and litter segration was encouraged.
Private residences were greatly praised.
“The standard of presentation of individual buildings and gardens is very high,” said the report.
The Mountrath approach road was tidy and maintained with clear signage, and the stone seat monument was admired, but the Borris in Ossory road needed work.
Overall it was deemed it a “very successful return” for Camross.
