Thumbs up for the Emo litter control
EMO achieved good marks in this year’s competition, scoring 286 points, and was commended for its high levels of litter control as well as the tidyness of the village.
It was also praised for its involvement with voluntary groups and its good relationship with the school. The judges were struck by the “impressive Emo Court and its grounds. The influence of the estate can clearly be seen in Emo village”. A number of private residences in the village were admired as well.
Both Emo national school and the GAA club looked very well on the day of adjudication and were praised, as were the old garden centre and Siopa Ioma.
A number of landscaping projects were observed, in particular heading towards the school “which is attractive and accomodates a good diversity of perennial species”.
Wildlife in Emo was considered a major strength of the village.
“The woodland park is a fantastic amenity for the residents and visitors, as well as being rich in biodiversity.” Judges were also very impressed with the number of people taking advantage of the park, using it for walking. The committee was also commended for its signage on the wildlife trail.
Praise was also given to the number of initiatives taken this year including talking to the schoolchildren about wildlife gardening and encouraging people to attend the annual Emo walk.
The standard of litter control observed was very high with virtually no litter spotted in the village. The committee was also admmired for it’s work done on raising litter awareness among schoolchildren and householders in the area, and for the work done completing litter picks.
A good standard of tidiness was also observed. “It is clear that your work on weed and poster removal, regular sweeping and sign post maintenance is paying off. The recycling centre also appeared to be spotless while Main Street was very tidy”. However a couple of areas were singled out for improvement on their tidiness for next year.
Approach roads received good marks as well, as did residential areas.
“The standard of presentation of individual houses and gardens in the estate was also quite good”, remarked the judges.
