Making the most of the facilities at the new Youth Cafe

YOUNG people of Laois will be unveiling their space this week as the Portlaoise Youth Cafe is officially launched on James Fintan Lalor Avenue.

Up and running since before Christmas, the Youth Cafe has been going from strength to strength since its opening. It will be offically launched by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD.

Comhairle na nOg will also be present on the day as many of their members avail of the youth cafe facilities. As well as launching the exciting new space for teenagers, the Irish Youth Music Awards will also be launched on the day. This is a national competition in which Laois participants have always done very well and no doubt there will be much excitement as to who will get to represent the county this year.

There is lots happening in the youth cafe at the moment, with their Glee Club beginning soon. The youth cafe are also working alongside Music Generation Laois on their School of Rock project which will be up and running next month. The youth cafe committee are hard at work and although they are busy working towards the launch, they have plenty of plans in place for the rest of the year.

The youth cafe will also be doing fundraising throughout the year as they need to raise money to compensate for cuts made in the last budget. It will be open extra hours this week to accomadate students who are off on their mid term at the moment and this will be the case for all summer holidays. Manager Joe Thompson said that the youth cafe is very lucky to have a number of hard working volunteers who keep these long opening hours possible. “They are fantastic volunteers - without them this would not be possible. We are also looking for people who would like to volunteer who are into dance, performace and and music tutition”. To find out more about the Youth Cafe, contact the office at 057 86 65010.
