Crafty workers for Port parade
anyone with sewing or painting skills is asked to call into Portarlington Enterprise centre to help with the “people’s parade” on St Patrick’s Day.
Theatre director Cabrini Cahill has been enlisted by the committee to add a dramatic touch of pageantry to this year’s parade, based on the theme of Port’s Vision 2020 plans. She is busy creating colourful costumes and props, with the assistance of the local scouts, boys brigade and kestrals. but is calling for more help to make it a parade to remember.
“There will be plenty of banners, characters, colour and laughter this year. The objective is to get as many people involved as possible,” says Ms Cahill, who has worked on many productions including the Electric Picnic.
Using the theme of Port’s Vision 2020, they are imagining what the future of the town will be in eight years, and what interesting new businesses will be there.
Local children will feature strongly in the parade, including the three local Irish dancing groups, ballet dancers and Elaine Hearty’s drama students.
“Obviously an undertaking like this needs a lot of costume and prop making so if you can sew a little, stick a little, paint a little please get in contact because we need your help,” Ms Cahill says.
Margaret Guijt Lalor is on the parade committee, and says themed floats are welcome.
“Everyone is welcome as always and if your town is not having a parade this year and you would like to take part in one, you are very welcome to take part in ours!” she says.
