Durrow gets ready to crow

BETWEEN Sunday July 24 and Monday August 1, crows won’t be welcome to the Howya Festival of Friendship which takes place in Durrow.

The picturesque village will become really family friendly when it hosts the second All-Ireland Scarecrow Championship.

During the week, the exhibition of more than a hundred scarecrows will invade the town, which is set to become a magical environment for young and old. Festival go-ers will get surprised at each street corner and meet Joe, Mick or the Queen Scarecrow when walking the Scarecrow Trail. Also this year, people can go back in time with the old trades demonstrations in the specially built Scarecrow Village.

A Family Fun Day will open the Festival on Sunday July 24, with puppet shows and games for kids, jarvey tours of the Scarecrow Trail,and a treasure hunt. There will also be exhibitions, workshops, walks, fairs, a duck derby and local produce markets taking place during the week. The result of the Scarecrow competition will be announced on Sunday July 31, with a big day on the village green.

Those who are feeling adventurous can enter their own scarecrow by Monday July 18. A number of scarecrow making workshops have already taken place in the village, but there is still one left which will take place this Saturday July 16 from 10am to 12pm in the CYMS Hall in Durrow.

Workshops are free of charge, but people attending are asked to bring an idea for a scarecrow, a needle and thread, a old pair of tights, and an old pillow or similar which contains padding. Focus will primarily be on making the head but people can also get assistance and advice on the body.

Festival organisers are currently looking for volunteers to assist them over the course of the festival. They are looking for people who have a few hours to spare between the festival dates, or in the lead up. Those who are interested can contact Marian on 086 3488254 or email marian@howya.ie.
