Festival of the Mountain’s gold year
Rosenallis is planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Festival of the Mountain in style this year and the organising committee is confident that this year’s show will triumph over previous shows.
While every show is a success, Sheila Mahon, PRO of the committee wants the golden year to be among the best. As part of the festivities the committee is gathering memories.
“We want 2012 to be the best Festival of the Mountain, we want it to be memorable. We are asking that anyone who has any memories or dealings with the festival, whether it was winning a title, or a childhood memory to please come and let us know about it, we want to share your memories on the festival on 24th June 2012.
“We hope to post photos and notes of little stories, this can be done anonymously if requested. Please let any committee member know or come to our meetings advertised locally,” she told the Leinster Express.
On August,26 1962, Rosenallis held thier very first Festival of the Mountain celebration which was organised by the late Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Kennedy. He encouraged people of all ages to attend and from the very beginning the show was a success. The festival has adapted and changed over the years but the crowds which it attracts have remained the same. Holding that interest over the years is something that the committee takes great pride in. With over 1,500 people in attendance last year, the committee hopes this number will further incerase in 2012.
Audiences can expect all of the usual and popular features at this year’s show. These range from the King and Queen of the Mountain and Glamorous Granny competitions, to Childrens Races and the extremely popular Dog Show along with many new events.
Cllr Seamus McDonald is Chairperson of the committee.
“We are expecting many different features. We have invited Senator David Norris to perform the opening ceremony and are planning many other attractions this year because of the fact that it’s the 50th Anniversary,” he said.
Cllr McDonald and Ms Mahhon said the committee is grateful for the attendance and support of neighbouring parishes and sponsors from both Laois and Offaly over the years. Sheila Mahon hopes that this will be better than every in 2012.
“The committee are very excited and are looking forward to seeing you all there for a great day out,” she said.
