Thieves scorch Laois

Abbeyleix Gardai are urging homeowners to be extra vigilant following a spate of burglaries by the same gang in the last fortnight.

The burglaries started in the Errill area last Saturday week, before targeting Templetuohy and heading back to the Abbeyleix district, via Lisdowney, where car number plates were stolen.

Houses in Ballinakill and Timahoe were also targeted. All the incicents took place between 5pm and 9pm, on Saturday, January 21.

Sgt Joe Culliton, Abbeyleix Garda Station said that the targeted houses were unoccupied, but the gang may have called to occupied houses last Saturday evening.

The thieves were mainly looking for cash and jewellery, but the sergeant said they did not get a lot from the houses. He said it was the damage caused that was most upsetting for the victims.

Sgt Culliton said all of the incidents were related and a dark blue or navy honda accord with a spoiler on the back was involved. The last sighting was in Timahoe. It is not known how many peoplewere involved.

Sgt Culliton said there has also been a couple of reports of the theft of home heating oil and diesel in the last week. He advised people to look at the location of their tank and make sure it is not visible from the road.

“There are a number of security features which would slow the burglar down,” he said.

Sgt Culliton said anyone looking for advice could contact the station and arrange for the Crime Prevention Officer to visit their home.
