Durrow student models milky fashion

Junior cert student Tess Stokes’ first taste of catwalk modelling has whetted her appetite for more.

The 5’10” teenager from Durrow modelled a dress made from 2,000 milk cartons created by fellow Kilkenny College student Heather O’Connor at the regional finals of a secondary school design competition, Junk Kouture last Sunday, April 3 in Clonmel.

The design challenge was to create wearable art and outrageous couture with used materials. Tess’s stunning look included a hat, decorated shoes and bag, with the pampered pooch inside even sporting a collar made from cartons.

Part of the overall marks given were for catwalk performance, and Tess admits she gave it her all. It was enough to land the girls in the grand final in the Burlington Hotel on Sunday, April 17.

“I really wanted to show off her dress as best I could. It was an unreal experience, and so much fun, I can’t wait to do it again,” said Tess.

Local woman Bernie Moloney attended the show.

“It ws mind blowing, the standard was so high and these two young girls were part of 15 who will now go through to the grand final,” she said.

While Tess has a keen interest in fashion, she intends to keep it as a hobby but is considering part-time modelling. As for preparing for the final, her attitude is positive.

“I don’t know what to expect. The competition will be tough, but we will try our hardest, that’s the best we can do,” she said.

There was also an other local involvment with budding James MacInerney taking some catwalk snaps.

The public can help the girls win by going to www.junkkouture.com and voting for Heather O’Connor, Calcium Couture.
