Adela and the Meanits tour diary - week two
OVER 1650 miles, 15 counties and one unintentionally darkened pub later we have thankfully sustained just one strained glutus maximus, a most serious funny-bone collision with the edge of a car door and the wettest battle between Electricity and a band Ulster has ever seen.
This leg of the tour kicked off with a daytime gig in Monaghan Shopping Centre. After realising that we underestimated our fuel expenses we introduced some pop-up marketing and thankfully the show went on.
With the petrol tank refilled, we headed for the Spirit Store in Dundalk. We loved the intimate venue and felt right at home with the rustic front living room vibe. Heading south for Crane Lane in Cork City we were blown away by the brilliant rebel crowd and even better dancers. A place we had always wanted to perform, it exceeded all expectations.
Johnny from Sky and the Ground deserves a special mention for being the first venue to book us for the tour and for looking after us very well... What a bar! Early next day we played Cafe Formenti in sunny Co Carlow. Their first daytime gig, our first coffee shop. Don’t worry, we’ll be back Ritchie.
After a quick chance to return home via karmic boreens we headed off to Ryan’s of Kilkenny where we played to our first stag party. And if that wasn’t enough the very next night we were accosted by our very first hen party under Ben Bulben in Sligo. The puppets will never be the same again.
Heading towards Donegal we make a brief stopover in the beautiful Sperrin Mountains to enthral some adventurous hikers. Soon after our first northern gig our first hurdle presented itself... a cancellation! Not to worry, after 17 minutes and 23 seconds we had ourselves booked into the amazing Coachfest Festival in Donegal town. Thanks to Del for having a little faith, “shame about the weather, things are gettin better”.
Onto Belcoo in Fermanagh, with it’s skittles, BBQ and dancing kids. We just hope there’s as much damhsa agus craic on Achill Island.
