Aussie duo for Lethean performance

Chris Kenna and Melissa Cox

Chris Kenna and Melissa Cox

THIS Sunday night, July 22, Lethean will be playing host to two Australians who have made their home in Paris.

Chris Kenna is a walking pocket of Australia in the midst of Paris. He sings about Fitzroy St, Chopper Read, being locked up in Queensland, rain in the desert. His voice, described as “hors du commun”, conjures images of red earth and ragged mountain ranges. Since living in Paris, Chris has been the opening act for Jeff Beck at the Olympia, Peter Green at La Cigale, Zucherro at the Zenith and Tommy Emmanuel at New Morning.

A chance encounter in a Parisian bar in 2008 launched a serendipitous collaboration with violinist Melissa Cox. A fellow Australian, she has performed at the Metro and the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, supporting The Waifs, Missy Higgins and the John Butler Trio. As black sesame, her debut album ‘Brink’ has received national airplay in Australia and has recently been featured in independent cinemas across the USA.

Together, Kenna and Cox perform regularly in France and across Europe. In October 2010 they also supported Alabama 3 at Tripod in Dublin. Chris has received rave reviews from his performances, this one from France said of the musician, “His deep, gravelly voice is perfect for his lavish blend of blues-folk-country. He told stories, punctuated by the occasional other-worldly roar, of Australian cowboys, gangsters, love and death.” Melissa has also enjoyed some of the same, “Melissa is gold; her inventive, spontaneous style is totally unique.”
