Big weekend of Trad music in Camross

NEXT Saturday November 10 sees Camross Comhaltas host a music weekend, with a day of workshops and a concert. This weekend is held to honour one of Camross Comhaltas’ founders Stephen Conroy, a man whose sense of Meitheal was clearly evident in the love he had for his local community.

Stephen was a hugely influential figure in the small rural community of Camross and he dedicated himself to organising events on a voluntary basis to promote the culture and traditions of Ireland and to enhance his community.

Stephen inherited his love of all things traditional from his parents but set dancing was his one true passion. As part of the week end friends from Dun Uladh Co Tyrone branch of Comhaltas are coming to visit and take part in the weekend’s festivities.

The music song and dance workshop will be held on Saturday in Camross School and Hall. From 10am there will be registration and grading; the morning workshop runs from 10.30am to 1pm and the afternoon workshop runs from 2pm to 4pm. The fee for these is €20 including the concert.

Contact Crescentia Phelan at 057 87 55283 or 087 136 7889 or email chrisphelan@vodafone.ie to book a place on the workshop.

The tutors on the day are all well known musicians from different parts of the country and are well known in traditional music circles.

Accordion will be tutored by Laura Davey and Martina Gorman; concertina will be tutored by Gearoid Keane and Ruth Hyland;

fiddle will be tutored by Rhona Lynch and Suzanne Delaney; flute will be tutored by Moss Landman and Jane Doheny; tin whistle will be tutored by Karen Tracey and Charlotte Phelan; banjo will be tutored by Brian Fitzgerald and James Harvey; and singing will be tutored by Darina Gleeson and Martin Delaney.

The day will conclude with a grand concert in Camross Parish Hall at 8.30pm. Admission is €10 for adults and €5 for children. Featured artists on the night include Tyrone Comhaltas, Leinster Youth Group, and Camross Comhaltas and friends.
