BUDDING singers and musicians from around the county have the chance to win a prestigious competition with some very beneficial prizes.

The Young Voice of Laois is a singing competition run by Durrow Development Forum in conjunction with the Laois School of Music which showcases and encourages the young talented singers of the county. Taking place on Saturday May 18 and open to singers between the age of 12 and 18 who live in the county, the winner of this coveted title will be awarded the Ronan Lawlor Memorial Cup and receive a voice training scholarship from the Laois School of Music, as well as the opportunity to perform at both the Durrow Scarecrow Festival and the Laois School of Music concert. Ronan Lawlor (son of Oliver and Ethel Lawlor, Durrow) was an accomplished musician who died tragically whilst travelling in South America at the young age of 28. Last year’s competition was won by Michael Kirkman from Abbeyleix who sang ‘Never Say You Can’t’ by Bruno Mars. If you are a talented singer and would like to follow in Michael’s footsteps, auditions are being held on Tuesday April 16 and Wednesday April 17 in Portlaoise College and the Castle Arms Durrow respectively. The entry form can be found in today’s paper or alternatively downloaded from www.durrow.ie. Please see full competition terms and conditions on www.durrow.ie. The closing date for entries is Tuesday April 9. Durrow Development would like to acknowledge the support of the Laois School of Music, the Leinster Express and Midlands 103.
