THERE is another cultural extravaganza on the way as the country prepares for the largest culture night ever, taking place on Friday September 21. Details of Culture Night 2012 were unveiled recently by Jimmy Deenihan TD Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT), in Cork City Hall.
On Friday September 21, museums, galleries, theatres, churches, historic houses, artists’ studios and cultural institutions will open their doors to the public for the largest Culture Night to date, with a record 34 towns, cities, counties and islands across the nation taking part in this late night cultural extravaganza.
2012 marks the seventh year of Culture Night and organisers TBCT are delighted to announce that this year’s programme is the most diverse yet, since the renowned late night of free cultural events was created in 2006.
People of all ages across the country are encouraged to take advantage of this national night of adventure and discovery, as cultural organisations and regional authorities across Ireland pull out all the stops to produce an unforgettable and unique evening of free cultural experiences for all to enjoy. Last year more than 300,000 people engaged with Culture Night across the country and we expect even more to join in the cultural celebration this year.
In Laois there is lots on around the county to immerse people in the culture of the county. In Abbeyleix there will be a young peoples’ music event in Heritage House at 3.30pm. There will also be an Abbeyleix Heritage Trail Walk meeting at Heritage House, Abbeyleix 6.30pm.
In Ballylinan there will be an exhibition, readings and classical music in St Annes’ Hall at 8pm, presented by the South East Arts Network. In Clonaslee there will be a music, literature and historical talk in Clonaslee Heritage Centre from 7pm to 9.30pm. In Coolrain there will be a Rambling House Evening in Sheerans Pub from 9pm.
In Emo there will be an exhibition and free guided tour of Emo Court starting at 6pm. In Fisherstown there will be stories, music and song in The Fishermans’ Thatched Inn. In Mountmellick there will be a talk on the works of Samuel Beckett by Dr Arthur Broomfield in Mountmellick Library from 3pm -4.30pm. Mountmellick Museum is open from 5pm to 8pm. Mountrath has a music and art trail commencing at the Cosy Café from 3pm.
In Portlaoise there is lots to do. Vocalese perform in Portlaoise Library at 4pm; there will be busking in Portlaoise Shopping Centre; a Stampede drumming workshop takes place with Eddie O’Neill in the Dunamaise from 4pm-5pm: there will also be an open mic event in the Dunamaise from 6pm to 7pm. Comhaltas then perform there at 8.30pm.
There is an International Cuisine Evening in Portlaoise Educate Together NS at 7pm - Guests are invited to bring along a hot or cold dish of their choice (savory or sweet), with the name of the dish, the culture/country. The Laois Writers Group are hosting a literary and music evening in The Mile Bush Restaurant from 8pm.
There are also a number of other events taking place in Portlarlington, Rathdowney and Stradbally.
