THOSE travelling to Newbridge over the coming weeks should stop into the Riverbank Arts Centre for an unusual exhibition made from childrens’ perspectives. The exhibition opens on Saturday December 8 and runs until the end of January.

The exhibition ‘Hidden Places’ aims to create a wonderland for children to explore using cut paper, light and mystery. Children are asked the questions: What is the world that they inhabit? What does it look like from their perspective? Using stories created by local children, Maeve Clancy makes an installation in paper and light which depicts their world.

Layers hung vertically from the ceiling create a closed space that invites children to come in and explore, away from the ‘normal’ or everyday world. Animations and rotating lights will be projected onto cut paper scenes and through the vertical layers, creating shadow play on the passing children. This exhibition is designed to give children of all ages a glimpse into environments inspired by young people, far from the control of the adult world. The ‘Hidden Places’ of past memories, current adventures and a child’s imagination.

Maeve graduated from NCAD with a BA in Visual Communications and The History of Irish Art and Design in 2001. Since then she has worked as an animator, illustrator and artist based in Dublin. Maeve has directed and animated various shorts, including two through Bórd Scannán/Irish Film Board schemes, ‘The Boy with The Ever Open Jaw’ and ‘The Dropping Well’. Her shorts have screened at festivals from Cork, to Europe and New York. She was involved in the creative production of two music videos, ‘Lille’ and ‘I Don’t Know’, by singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan.
