THE Dunamaise Arts Centre is currently hosting an exhibition of contemporary art quilts by Laois based artist Fiona Clancy, which opened in the gallery last Friday January 11. This will continue until Friday February 10.

The exhibition comprises of fourteen quilts in various sizes up to two metres wide, each designed, hand-dyed and sewn by Fiona. The handcrafted details and designs in each quilt are very evident in each as they draw upon Ogham, ancient scripts, stone walls and grids.

Fiona has also drawn inspiration, particularly with the colours she uses in her quilts from her travels thoughout South America, from which she has just returned.

Fiona Clancy from Naas in Kildare is living in Laois for the last 12 years. Having studied fashion design in the Grafton Academy originally, Fiona continued her studies with a course in quilting ten years ago and has been making quilts ever since.

She also studied ceramics at Abbeyleix College of Further Education and is now a member of Spikey Jar Studios, a women’s art group of past pupils of the college who create textiles, painting, mixed media, photography and ceramics.

All are welcome to visit the gallery. A price list is available from the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Schools are also welcome to attend the exhibition and/or to meet the artist in person for a talk about her work.
