Frank’s Shed studio host folk concert

FRANK’S Shed recording studio are hosting a folk conert in Mountmellick on Thursday March 21. The show will feature Dave Bowe, Speirling and Kevin Quigley. The concert will take place in the Balcony Theatre and will start at 8.30pm on the night, with admission only €5.

Eight piece trad group Speirling were formed in September last year. Members include Blaithin Tynan on main vocals and button accordion, Cathal O’ Connor on banjo and mandolin, Dale McKay on bodhran and percussion, Eamon Dunne on guitar, Sinead Keyes on concertina, Aishling Hickey on flute, Ruth Hennessy on fiddle and harp and Helen Brady on fiddle. Their musical influences are Ciorras, Goitse among other contemporary Irish music groups and musicians. Speirling are going from strength to strength and are representing Laois in the Irish music youth awards in Liberty Hall in Dublin on April 27.

Kevin Quigley is a young local up and coming singer songwriter, He has been playing guitar since he was 12 and writing songs since he was 15. His influences include that of Bob Dylan,Tom Waits,Glen Hansard and Freddie White and he is a regular performer at kavanaghs bar Portlaoise. He is currently preparing for his first EP recording.

Dave Bowe last year released the successful EP ‘Japanese Writing’. The four track EP is a snapshot of some of the work that Dave has written to date. Dave is a former music performance student of CSN in Cork, an establishment that has been home to the likes of Mick Flannery, O Emperor and Fred. It was here that Dave perfected his guitar and songwriting trade. He has played support slots for many big names including Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Declan O’Rourke.

Taking a year out from music to travel, Dave returned to Ireland and at the age of 24 suffered a stroke which affected his co-ordination. Frustrated at not having the same playing ability he once had, Dave sat about relearning aspects of his guitar playing that had been affected and two years later decided it was time to officially release some of his tracks and rejoin his world of music.
