Hats and Heywood in Abbeyleix

Heywood Gardens by Trudi Killeen

Heywood Gardens by Trudi Killeen

THREE locals are currently showing a unique exhibition in Abbeyleix Library featuring painting, sketches and millenery. The exhibition features painter Trudi Killeen, her daughter Niav Riley and architect Ciaran O Brien.

Trudi Killeen is a landscape, watercolour artist. She is also accomplished in detailed line drawings many of which were used by the Irish Times in conjunction with historical articles written by her husband John Killeen during the 1980’s. In 2005 Trudi and John retired to live in Heywood Village, where Trudi has captured the beautiful Heywood Gardens.

Niav Riley has been in business as a milliner for 10 years. A graduate from NCAD, Niav is an accomplished craftsperson and designer. Qualified as a fashion designer, Niav worked in Dublin and Australia designing ladies and children’s clothing. On her return to Dublin in 2001, she re-trained and worked as a graphic designer for three years before starting her own millinery business. Niav’s work has won many awards at racing events over the past few years.

Ciaran O’ Brien is an architect who has worked abroad and has been living in Laois for 10 years. He studied in Dublin and London and first took an interest in the midlands while completing a UCD landscape project at Lough Boora Parklands, Co Offaly. A chance to work in Laois in 2003 began an ongoing desire to live in and appreciate this wonderful landscape. This further developed into a series of drawings and sketches of everyday places and the spaces between buildings.
