Artist Doreen Burke with one of her pieces

LAOIS based artist Doreen Burke recently exhibited as part of a group exhibition in Ranelagh Arts Centre entitled ‘Elements - The Alternative Materials in Jewellery Design’. The exhibition was a celebration of the beauty and diversity of the materials used in the creation of the jewellery displayed.

Doreen Burke is a glass artist, photographer and jewellery maker working with resin. Her pieces are resin sculptures, mounted in white frames hand which were crafted by Seamus Kelly, each measuring 55cm x 55cm. Captured within these resin blocks is the ever changing blues and greens of the tide, the curve of a wave breaking, the beauty of autumn in the iridescent golds and purples, shining wet greens and burning bronzes. Pearls, acorns and tiny silver leaves of ivy are imbedded within the surface of the pieces. Each piece is a stand alone work of jewel -like beauty, the colours mesmerising in their richness.

Doreen Burke began working with resin whilst making jewellery for the RDS Craft Fair two years ago and graduated to larger more sculptural pieces. The predominant theme flowing through her art is the use of light and how it reflects the changing moods of the natural world, this can be clearly seen in her resin pieces and also her photography and larger scaled glass paintings.

The exhibition also features the work of Deirdre Ni Chonrua, an interior designer whose jewellery is made from a mix of beads, buttons, precious and semi-precious stones; Emma Andrews, a textile designer, and Ruzica Ruane a glass artist.
