Artists Cara Byrne and Lorraine Walsh working on their installation

THE Honeycomb project will once again be shining a bright light on recycling in the forthcoming Electric Picnic event which takes place from this Friday August 31in Stradbally Hall. The installation will be on show for the duration of the festival until Sunday September 2.

The Arthouse artists collaborating are Cara Byrne, Karen Hendy, Vera McEvoy, Cóilín Rushe and Lorraine Walsh. Each artist contributes different and varied skills to the entire project.

The honeycomb construction is currently underway and ahead of schedule. The installation consists of a large scale brightly coloured MDF structure with 2,500 empty plastic bottles protruding from its frame.

Each bottles has an individual coloured LED bulb and battery inserted, creating a specific vibrant colourful display and design.

All of the bottles used have been recycled, they were collected and donated by the wider Stradbally community. Coca Cola also kindly supported the project by transporting their reject bottles over to Stradbally during the last few months.

The artists are currently not giving away any information on the finished layout or of the three colour combination that is to be used in the finished design.

They were working from a discreet location until last Monday when the frame will be transported on a low-loader to Stradbally Hall for the final construction phase.

This final stage - the light up - will take place on site on Thursday. Images of the finished work will be published next week.

The artists would like to extend a big thank you to the Stradbally community, Laois County Council Arts Office and all the people who contributed to this wonderful project in many and varied ways.
