Laois Connects shares Wally’s story

Wally

Wally

AS part of Laois Connects - Laois’ mental health awareness week, ‘Wally’, a film documentary will be shown in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Monday September 17.

The film will be shown from 8pm and after the 40 minute feature there will be a question and answer session with both Wally and the film’s director Ann Marie Kelly. In the feature, Ann Marie follows Portlaoise Rapper Wally O’Loughlin on his journey to survival after a suicide attempt. Featured on RTE news, the film inspired a successful mental health program called ‘Hear Me, See Me’ for teenagers.

Wally grew up on Hungry Hill where there was not much talk about feelings. Music was his escape and the film is his story. It is a story of survival that aims to empower young people today to believe in themselves. It all went wrong for Wally in 2009 when he attempted suicide. Filmmaker Ann Marie Kelly followed Wally for two years, this is a story of survival.

‘Wally’ is a PG rated film and there must be parental supervision for under 18s. This is funded by Portlaoise Lions Club. For more information on the screening contact the Dunamaise Arts Centre at 057 86 63355 or visit www.dunamaise.ie.
