Masterclass with master author

John McKenna

John McKenna

AS well as readings, this year’s Leaves festival has a number of workshops to inspire budding authors and poets. One of these is ‘Seasons of the Heart’ with John MacKenna on Saturday November 10, which will take place in the Dunamaise Arts Centre from 10am to 4pm. This is a workshop exploring the ways in which people can draw on nature and their own life experiences to create fiction and memoir.

John MacKenna is the author of fifteen books - novels, memoir, biography, short-stories and poetry. He is also a playwright, both for stage and radio. His collection of poems, Where Sadness Begins, was published this September by Salmon Books and his latest novel and a collection of short-stories are due for publication in 2013.

The Kildare native taught for a number of years before working as a producer at RTÉ Radio in 1980. Between then and 2002, when he left the station to spend more time writing, and acting with Meeting Lane Theatre Company, John has worked in a number of areas including music, education, current affairs, documentaries, features and religion. MacKenna writes for, directs and acts with Mend and Makedo Theatre Co. He is the winner of the Irish Times Fiction Award; the Hennessy Award; the C Day Lewis Award; a Jacobs Radio Award for his documentary on Leonard Cohen and a Silver Medal at the Worldplay Radio Festival (New York) for his RTE radio play The Woman at the Window. He teaches creative writing and media studies at NUI Maynooth.

The workshop fee is €30 and booking is essential.
