New Mountmellick exhibit

<SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA>

SLIGO based artist John Cullen is currently exhibiting in the gallery in Mountmellick Library. Based in Sligo, John completed a BA in Fine Art from Sligo IT in 2009.

Previous exhibitions include Empress Gallery, Belfast 2010, Leitrim Sculpture Centre, September 2010, Westport Arts Festival October 2009. In 2011 he was awarded a two month residency at Belmont Mills art studios by Offaly County Council.

The exhibition in Mountmellick is really a retrospective of his work and a taste of what he is currently working on so it shows and interesting evolution of his art. In one room is his early material from 2009, this is largely abstract. The in the large exhibition room is his Emotional Fish collection from 2010 and 2011 and then in the third room is his current work which takes its inspiration from classical sculptures.

John said of his work: “My current body of work comprises paintings relating to fish. Rather than illustrating the fish, I use an image of a fish as a template in which to explore the form, colour, texture and shape of these otherworldly creatures, their sliminess, scaliness, fleshy boniness. The fish I paint are also visual metaphors for emotional states”.

As well as the exhibition, John will also be giving a talk on art history in Mountmellick Library. The date for this talk has not been confirmed but those who wish to attend can contact the library at 057 86 44572 for more information.

All artists are invited to submit proposals for the Gallery, contact the number above for info.
