Port launch for award winning poet

Poet Jean O' Brien

Poet Jean O' Brien

THE award winning Portarlington based poet Jean O’Brien will be hosting a local launch of her latest collection, entitled ‘Merman’(Salmon Publishing).

The launch is being held on Thursday December 6 at 7.30pm and will be hosted by The French 1/4 restaurant in French Church Street, Portarlington. Complimentary refreshments will be served. The new collection, O’Brien’s fourth, is named after the poem that won the prestigious Arvon International Award in 2010. When she won the award, she became the second Irish winner since it was set up by Ted Hughes in 1980. O’Brien is a regular contributor to RTE’s Sunday Miscellany. That programme’s producer Cliodhna Ni Anluain said of Jean’s latest collection that it contains “appealing directness”. O’Brien has previously been the Writer-in-Residence for Laois, and last year shared the stage with Booker prize-winning author John Banville during the Leaves festival. The cover picture is by local artist Ray Murphy.
