Dreamcomposition 15, the advent of the family not far from the ocean

PORTARLINGTON Library is currently hosting an exhibition of work called ‘Dream Compositions’ by artist. Daniel Lipstein. Daniel is a painter and a printmaker who is based in county Kildare, and who is a member of the Graphic Studio Dublin.

He holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design. Daniel is a winner of several awards such as the CAP Foundation in 2006 and the first prize award at the Biennial Printmaking Exhibition at Galway Arts Centre in 2010.

The work currently being exhibited in Portarlington library was made during the last ten years. These are etchings on hard and soft ground, triple and double plate etchings and aquatints, dry-point, carboradum and lithographs. These are compositions based on landscapes and dreams, or dreamscapes, and are called ‘Dream Compositions’. For example, one of the small etchings called “Watercourse” was done in 2002 and it is a meditation about the hereafter inspired by Flann O’Brien’s book ‘The Third Policeman’. Daniel’s work is partly based on the power and the flow of writing. In traditional printmaking plates are registered behind other plates in order to create additional marks and colour support to key plates when a full bodied colourful etching is done. In this exhibition there are two works where the artist has decided to show the supporting colour plate beside the key plate instead of registering it behind the key plate. This was done in order to highlight the beauty and the subtleties of the aquatint colour plate of ‘Facing the Spirit of the Ocean’, and the colour carborandum plate of ‘Dream Composition 2’.
