The Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise will welcome President Michael D. Higgins on Wednesday June 13 to celebrate the centre’s 13th birthday and Laois School of Music’s 10th anniversary.

President Higgins’ visit to Dunamaise Arts Centre resulted from an invitation which was issued from the Dunamaise Arts Centre and Laois School of Music on the occasion of their anniversaries. The visit will be his first to the Dunamaise Arts Centre and County Laois as President of Ireland.

he President’s visit in June to the Dunamaise will include a full tour of the building which has recently been refurbished to include a new multi-purpose mezzanine space with support from Laois Partnership.

To celebrate Laois School of Music’s 10th anniversary, students of the school will perform within the theatre at Dunamaise Arts Centre for the President and a specially invited audience. President Higgins will meet Art, Craft and Design students of Abbeyleix Further Education Centre, whose graduation show will be exhibited in the Dunamaise gallery. He will also meet members of Laois Youth Theatre and the Dunamaise’s own Unlaois’d Youth Dance Company, whose activities are resident in the centre.

Louis Brennan, Chairman of the Board of the Dunamaise, expressed his delight at the President’s visit.

“In his capacity as Ireland’s first Minister for the Arts, it was President Higgins who supported the building of the Dunamaise Arts Centre through the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht. It is with great pleasure and significance that we welcome his inaugural visit to the Dunamaise on June 13th as President of Ireland.

“It is also wonderful timing for the President’s visit as this year also marks Laois School of Music’s 10th anniversary. The Dunamaise is proud to continue our association with Laois Arts Office and the Laois School of Music and celebrate their anniversary with a performance in the theatre from students of the school of music for the enjoyment of the President.”

President Higgins will also be presented with a specially commissioned piece by Portlaoise based goldsmith Helena Malone.
