THE Arts Office in Laois County Council, in association with the community will host a wonderful selection of free events for the public on Culture Night which takes place this Friday September 21. There will be something for all the family to enjoy in lots of different venues throughout the county.

In Abbeyleix there will be a young peoples’ music event in Heritage House at 3.30pm. There will also be an Abbeyleix Heritage Trail Walk meeting at Heritage House, Abbeyleix 6.30pm. In Ballylinan there will be an exhibition, readings and classical music in St Annes’ Hall at 8pm, presented by the South East Arts Network. In Clonaslee there will be a music, literature and historical talk in Clonaslee Heritage Centre from 7pm to 9.30pm. In Coolrain there will be a Rambling House Evening in Sheerans Pub from 9pm.

In Emo there will be an exhibition and free guided tour of Emo Court starting at 6pm. In Fisherstown there will be stories, music and song in The Fishermans’ Thatched Inn. In Mountmellick there will be a talk on the works of Samuel Beckett by Dr Arthur Broomfield in Mountmellick Library from 3pm -4.30pm. Mountmellick Museum is open from 5pm to 8pm. Mountrath has a music and art trail commencing at the Cosy Café from 3pm.

In Portlaoise there is lots to do. Vocalese perform in Portlaoise Library at 4pm; there will be busking in Portlaoise Shopping Centre; a stampede drumming workshop takes place with Eddie O’Neill in the Dunamaise from 4pm-5pm: there will also be an open mic event in the Dunamaise from 6pm to 7pm. Comhaltas then perform there at 8.30pm.

There is an International Cuisine Evening in Portlaoise Educate Together NS at 7pm - Guests are invited to bring along a hot or cold dish of their choice (savory or sweet), with the name of the dish, the culture/country. The Laois Writers Group are hosting a literary and music evening in The Mile Bush Restaurant from 8pm.

There will be a multi-cultural performance in Portlaoise Leisure Centre from 6pm to 7pm and there will be a Portlaoise Heritage Trail Walk meeting at the James Fintan Lalor Commemorative Sculpture at Áras an Chontae at 6pm. There will be a Make a Ring exhibition at Helena Malone’s Studio in JFL Ave in Portlaoise from 3pm to 8pm.

In Portarlington there will be a creative writing workshop with Jean O’Brien and an exhibition of Artwork in Portarlington Library from 3pm -4.30pm. To book contact 057 8674343/42. There will be a drawing workshop in The Marian Centre, Rathdowney with local artists Sandra Kelly and Alison Cahill from 6.30-8.30. Contact 087 75 40368 for bookings.

Those interested and of an artistic mind can come along and enjoy workshops with the artists at the Arthouse Stradbally for adults and children from 4pm to 6pm. ‘The Measure of Stradbally’ is an interactive workshop with former NCAD graduate artist in Residence Vera McEvoy. ‘Marks’ is a workshop with Karen Hendy using found objects and different materials to form part of a visual installation. ‘Shadow Puppetry’ is a workshop with artist Lorraine Walsh to create Shadow Puppets. ‘Connections’ is a workshop with artist Gemma Guihan - a collaboration between poetry and painting.
